for "Math to the Max" Grade 1-6 Curriculum Resources
  • Initiated to address the needs expressed by math teachers
    in 156 Edmonton Public Schools in implementing the new math curriculum.
  • Planned and designed by a team of 30 teachers.
  • A creative, ongoing project currently involving two teaching consultants
    and two teacher/writers working toward the completion of the series.
  • Includes four sets of grades 1 to 6 resource manuals.
  • supports the new mathematics curriculum with lesson plans, activities,
    centres, assessment tools and homework pages.
  • Allows for teacher choice, varied teaching strategies, addresses individual
    student differences and a range of classroom and school demographics.
  • Emphasizes math processes, especially problem solving and communication.
  • Used by teachers in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.
  • Alberta Learning distribution warehouse has qualified these resources as
    "one of its top ten resources of the year".
  • Provides inservicing and followup coaching.

Meyonohk Dragon Dance Project

  • Four month project involving Meyonohk School teachers, students, staff,
    parents and community members in a great idea that grew and grew...
  • Resulted in a "majestic dragon" (23 m. long with metal, chicken wire and
    paper maché frame, with sparkling fabric as its skin, and wooden poles.
  • A creative collaborative project involving fundraising (begun October 1999),
    construction, and Dragon Dance instruction.
  • Included approximately 500 students from the English Core and the Chinese
    Bilingual Programs in a wide variety of activities and roles.
  • Represents over 500 volunteer hours.
  • Included performances at Chinese New Year celebration, Asian Heritage
    Month at Edmonton's City Hall, and a cultural exchange at Ermineskin School in Hobbema.
  • The Meyonohk Dragon is resting in its lair, awaiting future performances
    and the sharing of cultural activities.
