Recognizing and rewarding conspicuous merit in the field of Education in Canada

The George Croskery Memorial Award, named for a founding member and first secretary-treasurer of The Canadian College of Teachers, is given for nationally recognized achievement and service to Education in Canada. The "Croskery" Award is considered the highest honour granted by The Canadian College of Teachers.

Eligibility
Candidates must have shown, through their achievement and/or service in education in Canada, outstanding merit at the national level. Candidates need not be members of the College, but are normally resident in the area in which the Conference and Biennial General Meeting is held.

Awards Presentation
The award comprises a certificate, a suitably printed citation stating the significance of the award and the qualifications and experience of the recipient, and a gift, which may be appropriately engraved. Presentation of the award will be made at the closing Banquet on June 30 2007. The identity of the winner is a surprise to all apart from members of the National Council and the very few who "need to know".

Recognizing and rewarding members who have made a significant contribution to Education in Canada. Fellowships are awarded by the National Council of the Canadian College of Teachers to members of the College nominated by chapters.

Eligibility
Nominees for a Fellowship Award must have shown, through their achievement and service to the College and the profession, outstanding merit at the provincial and/or national level.

It is expected that a nominee will:

  • have been a College member in good standing for at least five (5) years;
  • hold an acceptable degree in post-graduate studies or an acceptable equivalent;
  • participate in a personal interview focusing on areas of special interest and contributions to education.
  • Nomination of Candidates
    Candidates for Fellowship Awards must be nominated by a chapter. It is expected that there will be no more than one nomination forwarded from a chapter in any given year. Nomination forms and the certification of procedures and enclosures are available from National Office.

    will be announced at the CCT Biennial General Meeting and Conference in June 2009


    Material submitted in support of awards becomes
    the property of The Canadian College of Teachers, with the right to publish.


    Masters and Doctoral levels
    Recognizing and rewarding excellence in educational research and educational studies, The Canadian College of Teachers places high value on discovering and making known theses findings which, if adopted, could lead to improvements in classroom practice throughout Canada.

    Eligibility

    • Candidates who have successfully completed a masters or doctoral program including thesis/dissertation requirements at a Canadian university, recognized by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
    • The thesis should have potential for supporting such objectives of the Canadian College of Teachers as "...the evaluation and dissemination of new ideas in education" and "...to assist in improving the quality of education in Canada."
    • The thesis must be one which is directly related to classroom practice. Its accompanying statement should be presented with clarity and insight so that the study's findings may be readily applied by classroom teachers and administrators of elementary and secondary schools.
    • The thesis must have been completed during the period from
      January 1 2007 to December 31 2008.

    Guidelines For Applicants

    • Submit one copy of the ABSTRACT (4 to 10 pages) which includes the following: a statement of the problem, a description of the design of the study, and details of the findings, with particular attention to their relevance to the improvement of educational practice at the elementary or secondary level in Canada.
    • Submit one copy of an ARTICLE intended for publication in an education journal. The article should be addressed to an audience of teachers and administrators who may wish to apply the findings in their everyday practice in elementary or secondary schools. It should outline the procedures to be followed and how the results will be of benefit to childrens' and/or teenagers' learning.
    • Omit the name of the author and the university from the ABSTRACT and the ARTICLE to provide anonymity during assessment.
    • Attach to each copy of the ABSTRACT and ARTICLE a title page including the following: thesis title, your name, thesis adviser, name of sponsoring university and date thesis was accepted. Candidates may be required to submit a copy of the thesis for examination by the Canadian College of Teachers panel of judges.
    • Each award includes a certificate and a sum of money:
      Masters Thesis: five hundred ($500) dollars
      Doctoral Thesis: one thousand ($1000) dollars

    Memorial Teaching Excellence Award
    2007-2009

    The Margaret A. Johnston Memorial Teaching Excellence Award is available for elementary and secondary classroom teachers who, through their teaching and/or related activities, have made an outstanding contribution to education in Canada.

    Nomination of Candidates
    Teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to education in Canada may be nominated by individuals and by officials and administrators of schools, school boards, universities, departments of education and other educational organizations.

    Criteria for Nominations
    The nomination should include the rationale for making the nomination, the documentation and letters provided in support of the candidate, the information provided on past and present activities of the nominee in his/her field, the specific contributions the nominee has provided to education, the major achievement on which the nomination has been made, the ways in which the classroom learning promotes or encourages students to be active participants, and the extent to which the program or activity is considered innovative. The nomination should include curriculum vitae of the nominee along with a rationale and appropriate documentation in support of the candidate. Letters of support from other professionals, committees or associations should also be included.

    Materials submitted in support of the award become the property of The Canadian College of Teachers with the right to publish.

    Awards Presentation
    Recognition in the form of a plaque and five hundred ($500) dollars will be announced at a formal meeting of the College.

    Museums & Schools Partnership Award

    Purpose of Award

    The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in collaboration between Canadian museums and schools in developing educational programming to enrich and expand students’ understanding of and appreciation for Canada’s cultural and natural heritage. This award will honor a school/school district and a museum/museum group that have worked together to achieve an educational opportunity through the collaboration of the two institutions.

    Eligibility

    The award is open to any Canadian school or school board in collaboration with any Canadian public non-profit museum (including closely related institutions such as zoos and science centers) or museum group, with the exception of institutions employing members of the Awards Committee.

                                Principles and Criteria for Selection
    Vision advances the possibilities of what museums and schools can achieve together
    Heritage enriches and expands students’ understanding of and appreciation for Canada’s cultural and natural heritage
    Collaboration demonstrates how museums and school can work effectively together
    Partnership shares authority, investment of resources and risk-taking
    Synergy realizes an educational opportunity neither partner could achieve without the help of the other
    Relevance demonstrated relevance of the project/program to the communities served and to the advancement of museum and school practice
